Paradigmatic Student Trajectory Through the PhD Program in Classics

First Semester Second Semester Summer
Year 1 Exam: Diagnostic sight exams in Greek and Latin prose and poetry (early September)

Coursework: Proseminar in classics or archaeology, whichever is offered; two additional seminars

Coursework: Intensive survey in Greek or Latin, whichever is offered; two additional seminars

Papers: Three graduate seminar papers written over the course of the first year and completed by end of year

Intensive individual preparation for upcoming Greek or Latin language exam
Year 2 Exams: Foreign language exam in French or German (September); PhD reading list translation exam in Greek or Latin—whichever was the topic of previous semester’s survey course (October)

Coursework: Proseminar in archaeology or classics, whichever is offered (the other of the two); two additional seminars

Coursework: Intensive survey in Latin or Greek, whichever is offered (the other of the two); two additional seminars

Papers: Two or three graduate seminar papers written over the course of the second year and completed by end of year

Year 3 Exams: Foreign language exam in German or French (September), whichever remains; PhD reading list translation exam in Latin or Greek—whichever was the topic of previous semester’s survey course (October)

Paper: If one paper (of the required six) remains to be done, it must be completed by December

Exam: Comprehensive oral examination (late April/early May)
