Crossing Borders: Translating the Ancient World

Students and faculty join in the conversation for Christie Carr's April visit.

On April 6th and 7th, Classics and Near Eastern Studies teamed up to host a joint event on the topic of translation with visiting speaker Dr Christie Carr.

Dr Carr (Brown University) earned an MA in Classical Studies at Exeter University (UK) before going on to a DPhil in Assyriology at Oxford. On Monday April 6th, graduate students of both departments participated in a lively a workshop to evaluate some of the challenges of translation from Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Greek and Latin. This was followed on Tuesday 7th by Dr Carr’s lecture titled ‘Longing and Lament: Eroticism in Sumerian Literature.’ The two days’ events culminated in a genial reception and dinner with our guest.
